The school’s competitive cheer team placed first at the NCA state competition last Saturday. The team competed in the Intermediate JV/ Freshmen division.
“This is the first state championship we have won. Last year we received second place in the state championship, in the same division,” Coach Kalb said.
The victory was Vandegrift’s first at this competition. The team scored an 89, higher than any of the other three teams in their division.
“We were all really nervous and it didn’t help that it was really foggy and we couldn’t see well,” freshman Genevieve Moses said.
The girls were able to put aside the nerves and distractions and push through to win. They were well prepared and trained. Even with a state title, they are not done with practice. They will compete in the NCA National Championship in January.
“We will be working on routine improvements and perfecting stunts and tumbling,” Kalb said.
