Untold story of honor guards

Legacies stand in straight lines, with crisp uniforms and big smiles on their face. Behind the perfection are 11 men running around to make sure the perfection stays that way. Honor guards have been with the Legacies since the beginning. They make sure everything runs smoothly for our Legacies, and they also perform in the Legacies Spring Show.

“[Honor guards] are something that a lot of dance teams have,” dance director Holly Lyons said. “And it is also a good way to get other people in the school involved, not just girls. We thought they would be a very helpful, positive and fun addition to our team and organization.”

There are 11 honor guards who complete a multitude of tasks for the Legacies such as preparing the bleachers, carrying their items and helping with props during the halftime show. Each honor guard has to fill out an application to make it into the program.

“I would say I am one of the leaders,” senior Kougar Walker said. “I get things done and try to get in and get out. But as a team, Honor Guards are basically the heavy lifters and carriers.”

Honor guards escort Legacies out to the field and make many types of runs, like for coffee from Starbucks and ice for cooling down from practice and injures.

“In an everyday type of thing, Tyler gets Starbucks and that seems stupid but is is really awesome,” lieutenant Nico Verar said. “Literally if there is any problem ever, you kinda just find like the nearest guards and yell there name and make them do it. They are so helpful they carry things, and build things, they’re just amazing.”

Each man has gained something different from being in the honor guard program and has had different experiences getting there.

“It is definitely fun,” sophomore Brian Dehne said. “You get closer with a lot of people, I don’t talk to many guys, so having ten other guys you can just talk to and you all are there doing the same thing and there for the same reason it really is fun and it definitely gives you more friendship.”
