Lacrosse prepares for season with tournament play

The boys and girls lacrosse season is just kicking off. Both teams are already hard at work preparing for the upcoming spring season. The girls’ lacrosse team is a brand new addition to Vandegrift High School. Practices have begun along with some tournament play. The boys and the girls’ teams are working to secure a spot at the state championship like any other sports team.
“We would like to show the other teams in Texas that we are here for business and, like every other sports team, we are going for a state championship,” junior Brooks Gillespey said.
The boys’ team is preparing to play some of their toughest opponents, Cedar Park and Westlake. The girls’ team is practicing to get better and improve the team dynamic since it is their first year playing together as a team. The girls have been traveling all over the state of Texas to play in tournaments this fall. They have hopes of playing together as a team as well as winning every game they can.
“I look forward to watching the new girls learn and grow into great lacrosse players who love the sport as much as I do,” senior Lydia Genovesi said.
Though this sport is not considered a part of Vandegrift athletics as it is a club sport, the players have proven that they are still prepared to work hard to make it to the state championship.
“This year is going to be our best year yet. We plan to make a run for state, with help from our new head coach Patrick Huskins leading us,” senior Kyle Elliott said.
