Summer is the time to explore the city, try out new things, and partake in an assortment of activities that will make your summer incomparable to any other time of the year. For this reason, and in order to improve your summer experience our student media staff and some of our student body have curated recommendations for outdoor and indoor activities that guarantee a fun break like no other.
Paddleboarding at Ladybird Lake
Ladybird Lake is an Austin staple and a must-do for the summer. Paddleboards and Kayaks can be rented at a variety of locations, including senior Zak Meishentalter’s very own company “Peace Paddling”
“I definitely would [recommend paddleboarding with us] because we’re really cheap, so it’s a nice, easy thing for high schoolers to do,” Meisenhalter said. “You just come out and you park your car at our lot, and we drive you down there, we get you out on the water. It’s super fun. Lake Austin is always super refreshing.”
Meishenhalter’s company offers rental services, boat charters, as well as surf, wakeboard, and water sport classes. These activities will keep you entertained, but be sure to bring sunscreen and towels to keep yourself dry and sunburnt-free.
Free Concerts at the Long Center on Thursdays
“The Drop-In” is a series of free concerts held on The Lawn at the Long Center. The concerts begin May 22 and take place every Thursday until August 14.
“Music is such a core part of Austin culture,” senior and newspaper staff Indie Whitaker said. “These free concerts are a great way to embrace the city and hear new artists that aren’t quite as big.”
The artists performing will be revealed the Friday prior to their respective concerts, so be sure to follow The Long Center on social media to witness the reveals.
Indoor bouldering at Austin Bouldering Project
Indoor bouldering is the trend that has taken Austin by storm. With a variety of locations all over town, anyone can participate in this activity no matter the area of Austin you find yourself in. Many students, including junior Jake Vogt, who has an instagram account @jakeclimb to share his bouldering experience, have already begun climbing
“It’s a good workout, and also there’s a good social aspect to it,” junior Vogt said. “A lot of the climbers at the gym love talking about the climbs and like helping other people. If it’s too hot out, you can go inside and boulder, but there’s plenty of outdoor, real rocks that you can climb if the if the weather is nice”
This activity will keep you entertained while also raising your heart rate and giving you the athletic thrill many seek out over the summer break.
Zilker Summer Musical
This summer, Zilker Theatre Productions will perform “Bring it On” from July 11 through August 16. Admission is free but donations are encouraged.
“It’s a really great experience,” senior Max Hunter said. “You can picnic, and everyone who is in the production put a lot of hard work into it”
“Bring It On” The Musical explores the world of competitive cheering through a diversity of songs and musical numbers featuring Lin Manuel Miranda’s lyricism. This is sure to be an entertaining experience.
Going To Guadalupe St. Thrift Markets
From Thrift Markets to Thrift Stores, Guadalupe street is the place to be when it comes to finding second-hand and vintage clothes to give your summer wardrobe and your year-round style an inspiring boost.
“The Guadalupe thrift market is really good for finding unique but affordable pieces.” senior and newspaper editor Julia Bychowski said. “There’s so many different vendors which bring in so many more peculiar products to look at.”
