“Into the Woods”: A marvelous mix of charming princes, humorous witches and crazy step sisters

Chris Pine, Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt and many more award-winning actors filled the big screen this past Christmas day in Disney’s Into the Woods.

Into the Woods is a broadway musical turned star-studded motion picture. Based on a myriad of classic fairy tales, the movie follows the lives of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk and the baker and his wife.  Audiences are shocked by the unexpected twists and turns that the movie takes you on.

The movie takes place in a series of three days. Similar to the movie Valentines Day, the character’s story lines intertwine in one way or another. The movie begins with introducing a task set before the baker and his wife: to find a lock of golden hair, a red cape, a golden shoe and a milky white cow. Through this journey they [literally] run into Cinderella, save little Red and her granny, sell Jack his magic beans, and of course discover Rapunzel in her ominous tower. All of this combined with a crazy Meryl Streep, a few charmingly conceited princes and a kingdom built right out of a story book, make for a movie you will want to watch again and again.

Because the movie is made from a musical, there was a lot of singing involved.  So if you can’t stand show tunes, you probably won’t like it. But if you love nothing more than to sing along to classic Disney songs, you will find this movie very entertaining. The prologue song, “Into the Woods” is definitely the most recognizable song, but my personal favorite was “Agony,” performed by the two brother prince charmings. Never once did I find the music anything but entertaining.

This movie made me laugh, cry and everything in between. I have always loved fairy tales. Nothing makes me happier than the prospect of princesses and happily-ever-afters. I love that this movie brings all of that and much, much more.
