Teacher Spotlight: Coach Jackson

Sarah Davis, Sports Center

Q: A little bit about coach Jackson outside of school…

A: I was born and raised in Amarillo, TX.  I went to college in Canyon, TX at West Texas A&M (GO BUFFS!!!).  I am finishing my 7th year teaching and coaching, 3rd here at Vandegrift.  I like to do anything outside and love to explore Austin and all it has to offer when I get a chance.

Q: Coach Jackson wanted to teach AP human Geography, US history and coach football and baseball because…

A: Teaching:  I have always taught Pre-AP World Geography so the new AP Human Geography was a great fit and great challenge.  I love teaching about where people are located, why they are there, and what they do there including cultures, language, economic & government systems, Land use & Urban geography and why all these exist.  I think it’s a fascinating study.  As far as US History, I have always loved history and how it has shaped the world today.  So I enjoy educating students on events and how it has shaped modern America.

Coaching:  Well, in High School I was captain of my football and baseball teams.  I was always the person that my teammates and friends came to understand what was going on from a specific play to practice schedule and even looked at me to be a liaison between my team.  These are all things that coaches do.  So, coaching is a natural fit for me.

Q: Coach Jackson loves teaching at Vandegrift because…

A: I love the culture of the school.  Everyone here is so special.  The Student body is unlike any I have ever been around.  They are so supportive of each other and have really taken the faculty leadership and the vision of Principle Little and his staff and created something very special here. I have also grown very close to the staff and have found many lifelong friends here.

Q: What you can expect in coach Jacksons class..

A: Students should expect to be treated as adults as long as they act like adults.  I like to have discussions in class and not do a lot of book work.

Q: A fun fact about coach Jackson

A: I drop bombs in the Faculty vs Softball team yearly!!
