Kieran’s Korner: Safety Not Guaranteed

Kieran Daly, Entertainment Editor

If you have a Netflix account, then you’re lucky; you have the opportunity to watch the Indie/Comedy/Romance/Drama, Safety Not Guaranteed. The film is directed by Colin Trevorrow, the same man who is writing the screenplay and will direct the next Jurassic Park movie Jurassic World.  The film stars Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Recreation and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Jake Johnson (New Girl and Drinking Buddies), Mary Lynn Rajskub (24 and Little Miss Sunshine), Karan Soni and Mark Duplass (The League).

The film follows Darius (Plaza), a disillusioned college graduate who lives at home with her widower father and interns at Seattle Magazine. During one of her usual days at work she is picked by one of the magazines writers (Johnson) along with another more awkward intern (Soni) to find the writer of a mysterious newspaper add that reads, “Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. P.O. Box 91, Ocean View, WA 99393. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.” After meeting the eccentric writer, Kenneth (Duplass), Darius starts to believe that there may be some truth to the ad and starts to fall in love.

I loved the film because it was like nothing I had ever seen before. It was extremely funny and I loved every single minute of it. The acting in the film is superb, and the script is phenomenal. The film won awards at ALMA Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, Indiana Film Critics Association, Sundance Film Festival and many more.

If you are on Netflix looking for a great film to watch either by yourself or with friends, I highly recommend this film.
