Boys swim wins state

Swim and dive went to state last Saturday, boys won state overall and girls won ninth overall.

“It feels awesome to have won state,” junior John Winkler said. “Because all of our hard work really payed off.”

The boys 200 medley placed third at state with Justin Balabar, Andrew Pickard, Zach Bezella and John Winkler.

“I knew we were gonna win,” senior Balabar said. “We had so much depth on the team that there was no we couldn’t.”

The boys 200 freestyle came in first at state with Zach Bezella, Andrew Pickard, Daniel Salman and John Winkler.

“It was awesome,” senior Bezella said. “I was happy I helped out our relay that went on to win state.”

The boys 400 freestyle came in seventh at state with Andrew Osorio, Tucker Mathis, Brian Donohue and Daniel Sarman.

“Considering that my freshman year was the first year we ever won region and that my last year swimming we won state,” senior Donohue said. “I would have to say it’s been a honor seeing the team grow as it has all the way to the highest title we can earn.”

The girls 200 medley placed seventh in state with Alyssa Arnold, Lexi Livingston, Savannah Broughton and Hannah Palacios.

“It’s really exciting to have such good competition,” junior Broughton said. “But it can be nerve racking at times.”

The girls 400 freestyle relay came in fifth place with Julianna Birlin, Hannah Palacios, Elizabeth Nelson, and Jade Federlin

“The 400 is definitely harder,” senior Nelson said. “It’s at the very end of the meet so everyone is watching and there is more pressure, but it is more rewarding because even though it is harder it’s a better payoff.”

The girls 200 freestyle relay came in fifth place at state with Julianna Birlin, Rachel Tovar, Elizabeth Nelson and Jade Federlin.

“We felt good about making into the top five at state,” senior Tovar said. “We’re really glad we got to have that experience.”

Some of the swimmers do individual events. John Winkler placed third in the 100 freestyle with a new team record and also received third in the 200 freestyle.

“I think it was the 100 freestyle [that I was stronger in],” junior Winkler said. “Because I broke the school record twice and beat the swimmer seeded ahead of me.”

Zach Bezella broke a team record after placing fourth in the 50 freestyle and placed sixth in the 100 butterfly.

“I like the 50 better,” senior Bezella said. “There’s no pacing, no thinking, you just swing your arms as fast as possible and hope for the best.”

Justin Balarbar placed 14 in the boys individual 100 backstroke.

“I felt proud of myself,” senior Balarbar said. “I was able to contribute some points to the guys team victory.”

Andrew Pickard placed seventh in the boys individual 100 breaststroke and ninth in the boys individual 50 freestyle.

“I was very happy that I was able to even qualify in both events,” sophomore Pickard said. “Even though I didn’t get the best times I had a really great experience.”

Maddie Riley qualified in the girls individual 100 breaststroke.

“It feels pretty good,” freshman Riley said. “Everyone else did really good at district and state, so I was just happy to go to get more points for the team.”

Daniel Sarman also broke a team record after placing ninth in the boys individual 200 IM.

“Really good, I didn’t have the best prelims,” sophomore Sarman said. “I added a bit of time, but for finals I didn’t even think about and won b finals and got a best time”

Hannah Palacios placed ninth in the girls individual 100 butterfly.

“I feel pretty good,” junior Palacios said “I broke 58 seconds in it and that was my goal.”

Jade Federlin placed 10 in the girls individual 100 freestyle and 11 in the girls individual 50 freestyle
