Week Two Fantasy Football Tips

Carson Field, Sports Editor

Players to start this week:

QB Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints)

Saints quarterback Drew Brees is a player to start in week two. Brees will have a big week for fantasy owners as he faces the vulnerable defense of the Buccaneers who allowed rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota to throw four touchdown passes.

RB Ameer Abdullah (Detroit Lions)

Rookie Ameer Abdullah will play a big role in the Lions’ offense this week as they play against the VIkings. I do not see the defense that gave up 20 points to the 49ers stopping him as he had a great game last week in the loss against the Chargers.

RB DeAngelo Williams (Pittsburgh Steelers)

Former Carolina Panthers star DeAngelo Williams will have a big week for the Steelers as starting running back Le’Veon Bell is still suspended for this game. This is the perfect matchup for Williams as the Steelers play against the 49ers who have many holes on defense right now.

WR Julio Jones (Atlanta Falcons)

Star receiver Julio Jones went off in week one against the Eagles. He had 26 fantasy points in ESPN Standard Leagues, and I expect him to have another great game in week two. Jones faces a defense that allowed Tony Romo to throw for 356 passing yards, and I expect Jones to have at least 100 receiving yards and one or more touchdowns in this week’s matchup.

Dolphins’ Defense (Miami Dolphins)

If fantasy owners do not already have the Dolphins’ defense in their leagues, they should pick them up this week. This defense is already one of the best defenses in the league as they are led by star defensive players Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake, but they should have higher production than usual as they face the weak offense of the Jaguars led by Blake Bortles.

Players to sit this week:

QB Marcus Mariota (Tennessee Titans)

Second overall pick Marcus Mariota in the 2015 NFL Draft had a spectacular performance last week in his first NFL game as he threw for four touchdowns against the Buccaneers. However, I do not see Mariota having a great second week as he faces a solid Browns defense. Fantasy owners should not be fooled by his heroic week one performance as I believe his rookie season will be up and down.

RB Lesean McCoy (Buffalo Bills)

Running back Lesean McCoy was the biggest acquisition that the Bills made in the offseason and looks to have a promising career in Buffalo; however I would not start him in fantasy this week. McCoy and the Bills face the Patriots’ tough defense. They shut down the high powered Steelers offense in week one, and I see the defense shutting down the Bills’ running game.

RB Alfred Morris (Washington Redskins)

Alfred Morris has shown that he is a very skilled running back over the years for the Redskins, but I do not see him having a good game this week. Morris’ rushing attack is most of the Redskins’ offense, but with the great rush defense of the Rams, who shut down the reigning NFC Champion Seahawks in week one, I do not see the Redskins having much offensive power.

WR Randall Cobb (Green Bay Packers)

Packers receiver Randall Cobb is definitely in the top five receivers in the NFL, but he will not have a good game in week two. The Packers will find themselves running the ball more than passing as they face the Seahawks’ defensive secondary known as the Legion of Boom. Aaron Rodgers may target Cobb a couple of times during the game, but there is no guarantee of a completion with the Seahawks’ stellar defense.

Texans’ Defense (Houston Texans)

In week one, the Texans’ defense imploded as they allowed the Chiefs to score 27 points on them. I do not see this as an indication that the Texans’ defense is not strong as they have the best defensive player in the NFL, J.J. Watt, but I do not think that their defense will be strong in week two as they face dual-threat quarterback Cam Newton and the Panthers. Newton is known for picking defenses apart and I do not see this week as an exception.
