The Vandegrift swim team won district for the third time in a row. The Vipers beat schools such as Cedar Park, Vista Ridge, Temple, Leander and Burnet to clinch another consecutive championship.

“It’s an amazing feeling to see all of our hard work pay off,” senior Lindsey Thompson said. “My freshman year, our team was still developing and there was only a few who qualified for region, and now to see more than half the team make region is incredible!”

The Viper swim team won by a significant margin, beating the team who got second place by double the amount of points.

“The boys and the girls both did awesome,” senior Sydney Sanders said. “Both demolished other teams and had multiple first places in the majority of the events, and the boys and girls team each placed first.”

This third consecutive championship did not come easy. The Viper swim team trained extremely hard for the district meet, practicing long hours before and after school.

“We all prepared for districts by training really hard this whole season,” senior Jonathon Broughton said. “The two weeks before the district meet, we all got lots of rest and made sure we were ready to go before districts so there was a lot of preparation involved.”

The next challenge for the swim team is to win regionals which will be at Texas A&M University College Station this upcoming weekend Feb. 6-7.

“We will be taking a good amount of people to region this year,” Broughton said. “We have all trained very hard so I think we have a good chance of being able to win regionals for our third year in a row.”

The Vipers who go to region will then have a chance to qualify for state and move on to the state swim meet at the University of Texas at Austin on Feb. 20-21

“It feels awesome to be three time district champions,” Sanders said. “Our team works so hard and I think we can go on to win region and maybe even state as well.”
