Teen Wolf Review

With season six just around the corner, coming out on November 15 on MTV, Teen Wolf fans are definitely getting excited. Due to Dylan O’Brien’s serious injury, watchers have had to wait six more months than expected, which has obviously built suspense. Teen Wolf is an action-packed show that follows the life of protagonist Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), who is an average teenager that suffers from asthma and lives with his single mother in a town called Beacon Hills. One night, Scott and his best friend, Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O’Brien), learn about half of a corpse that was found by police in the woods. The two set out to find the other half, but Scott is attacked and bitten by a werewolf. Scott soon gains supernatural abilities, which allow him to excel as the captain of his high school lacrosse team and gain the respect of a popular girl named Lydia Martin (Holland Roden). Scott also develops a romantic relationship with the new girl, Allison Argent (Crystal Reed). However, he soon discovers that her father Chris Argent (JR Bourne) is a werewolf hunter. If this all wasn’t complicated enough, Scott and Stiles meet a werewolf named Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin), who lost his entire family in a mysterious house fire six years previously. It is later uncovered that the dead body that was found by police was Derek’s surviving sister, Laura, and that an Alpha werewolf, the most powerful of all the werewolves, is on a murdering spree and is responsible for biting Scott and killing Laura. Realizing the perils of his new life, Scott must protect his family, friends, and his new girlfriend Allison, who is unaware that she comes from a family of werewolf hunters. Throughout the seasons, Scott never gets a break from supernatural havoc, but he has his friends to help him, and they always seem to make it through in the end.

For me, Teen Wolf has been one of the only shows that I’ve become completely addicted to. I throw homework, food, sleep, and basically everything else to the wayside when there’s new episodes to watch. Many people believe that it’s the (admittedly) attractive men that entice viewers, but shirtless men alone can’t keep 2 million people avidly watching for years on end. There is so much more depth to this show than people realize. Not only is there an endless stream of unexpected and engaging villains, there are also many complex relationships that take place and capture the hearts of all viewers. My personal favorite is the budding romance between Stiles, Scott’s best friend, and Lydia, the popular girl who is later discovered to have supernatural powers of her own. Stiles has had a crush on Lydia since the third grade, and while she has never noticed him in the slightest, Stiles has concocted a ten year plan to win her over and make her as in love with him as he is with her. Throughout the seasons, their lives intertwine more and more, and they eventually become very close friends, and are known for solving the many mysteries of Beacon Hills. While the duo do have their ups and downs, it is heartwarming to see Stiles slowly win Lydia over in the romantic sense.

Alright, it’s time to get real for a second. A review wouldn’t be fair without admitting to the few, but present faults of Teen Wolf. Firstly, while the special effects have improved dramatically throughout the seasons, they were pretty terrible during the first season. Also, though the plots are definitely engaging, it sometimes feels like they were not planned very far in advance and the results don’t completely make sense. All in all, though, I would 10/10 recommend this show. It’ll change your life – and possibly decrease your sleep and grades in the process.
