Students prepare for Oliver

Theater recently started rehearsals for the spring musical, Oliver, which will be performed Jan 12-14 and Jan 19-21 at the PAC.

“I like how the show has a ton of personality and how the songs always seem to get stuck in my head,” sophomore Judith Roberts, in ensemble, said. “I also like the wide variety of characters.”

Auditions were held in October for the musical.

“I auditioned for Oliver because I love musical theatre and stage performing,” Roberts said. “I enjoy being a part of our theatre program, and I couldn’t wait to come back after last year when we did Cinderella.”

Oliver is about an orphan named Oliver who gets sold to an awful family. Oliver runs away and gets found by a man who turns a group of homeless kids into thieves. Throughout the musical, Oliver is trying to find a good home.

“My favorite thing about Oliver is that I get to play the bad guy,” senior Collin Brown said. “I don’t usually get to do that but in Oliver I play Bill Sykes who is a master thief and murderer who tries to kill Oliver.”

The cast of Oliver rehearses every day after school in the PAC from 4-6:30.

“We’ve been preparing since October,” junior Macy Rex, who plays Oliver, said. “It’s been difficult but really fun.”

Many cast members say that this spring musical is different from past musicals they have done.

“The show and character have a lot of background that I can look into and have fun with,” Rex said. “It’s different than any musical I’ve done, because of the adaptation of the story of the original Charles Dickens book into a musical, and the traditional but fun music.”

Roberts says she is excited for the performances.

“I think we have a very talented cast,” Roberts said. “I love the show and think the performances will be unique.”
