To apply what students have learned about histology, Dr. Ellen Conner’s anatomy and physiology classes created a project to explain the coming of a zombie apocalypse in Austin by the damaging of different tissues that they’ve learned about.

“Histology is tough especially when you’re first learning about it, so after the students took the exam I wanted to give them extra credit to ease anxiety and reinforce what they had just spent so much time learning about.  It was right around Halloween and zombies were trending so it ended up being a good fit and fun relevant way to apply the histological tissue characteristics,” Conner said.

It is a tradition that Dr. Conner has made her students do around Halloween since she began teaching at Vandegrift.

“Watching what the students came up with never ceases to impress and entertain me and as long as students keep creating amazing projects we’ll continue to make them,” Conner said.

Working in a group, students worked in and out of class to create their presentations. Students were able to make a skit, video, PowerPoint, or anything else to show their knowledge of the different tissues.

“It was such a fun way to learn more about Histology because it was something we could work on using creativity,” junior Lizzie Nelson said.

Students presented their projects last Thursday and Friday to get into the Halloween spirit.

“My group worked really hard and it turned out well so I’m so excited to see how we did on our project,” Nelson said.
