Teacher Spotlight: Mike Meadows

    1. Please write a little bit about your life outside of school (pets, family, hobbies and activities, etc.)
-I moved to Austin in 2005 from the Dallas / Ft. Worth area. I have two daughters, a 6th grader at Canyon Ridge and a freshman here at VHS. While teaching math to 150 kids is no easy task, it pales in comparison to raising two teenage daughters. I like watching the Cowboys, Longhorns, and Lakers but admit they haven’t given me much to cheer about recently.  I still like to shoot hoops and frequently hit the trails around the area for a peaceful jog.

    2. What made you want to teach math?
-Coaching was the inspiration that brought me to education but the classroom is what keeps me in education.  Math was just something that was easy to me as a kid. I loved to figure things out back then and still find satisfaction solving a difficult problem.

    3. What is your favorite part about being a teacher at Vandegrift?
-Teaching at Vandegrift is easy, because the students make it that way. The respect for one another in the classroom is incredible.  I am thankful that my own kids are a part of something as special as this community.

    4. What should students expect for the year?/what is your classroom environment like? (you can answer either of these questions, they pretty much mean the same thing) 5. What is one fun fact about yourself? (a hidden talent, special interest, something super cool about you)
-Students should expect to be pushed out of their comfort zone. After all, we are preparing “now” for college. Don’t tell yourself that you will just “turn it on” when the time comes. Practice makes perfect.

    5. What is one fun fact about yourself? (a hidden talent, special interest, something super cool about you)
-It was very exciting to see the band and vision win their state title this year.  And it is close to my heart, for I too am a state champion. I was a part of the team that defeated Dallas Kimball in 1986 to win the class 5A championship.  The bond I have with my brothers on the court is something that I will carry with me forever.
