Single review: Empty Nesters by Toro Y Moi

Kelly Rosenblatt, Editor in Chief

Toro Y Moi, Chaz Bundick’s chillwave persona, released a new single, Empty Nesters, last month along with an announcement of a new album release set for this April. The musician has been extremely busy in the past year and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Bundick has been on tour as Les Sins, his dance project name, for the past few months to promote his new dance album, while simultaneously planning for his new American tour and composing his new album, What For? as Toro Y Moi.

If the single Bundick released with Pitchfork is any indication of what What For?  is going to sound like, fans are in for a treat. The single maintains Bundick’s same personal lyric style and use of soft-synth but there is definitely an element of a slightly more rock oriented vibe to the melody. There is still a prominent synthesized tune however, the song features slightly more instrumentally authentic guitar and drum solos.

As an avid fan of chillwave I am confident that despite the strong rock influence in Empty Nesters, the song stays true to the chillwave genre. The combination of styles on this track highlight some of my favorite aspects of Bundick’s sound as Toro Y Moi while slightly mixing up the vibe for a refreshing new take on chillwave. The track leaves me excited to hear more and with lots of anticipation for Bundick’s upcoming show in Austin this May. Whether you’re a hardcore chillwave music fan, or looking for a new and unique artist to listen to, check out Toro Y Moi’s Empty Nesters.
