ACL artist preview: Mac DeMarco

The 2014 ACL lineup has its fair share of world-famous musicians, however, the festival is also featuring dozens of up-and-coming musicians, ready to showcase their music at one of the largest music festivals in the country.

One of the newer musicians performing this fall is Mac DeMarco, an emerging indie rock artist known for his off-kilter music videos and raunchy stage acts.

DeMarco grew up in Duncan, British Columbia, and started pursuing music as a high schooler, playing in bands including the Meat Cleavers, The Sound of Love and Outdoor Miners, and eventually signed with Capture Records as a solo artist.

It wasn’t an easy journey for DeMarco to get to where he is in his solo career. Going through several bands and solo artist endeavors, DeMarco had to self-produce his album, Heat Wave, and even participated in experimental medical studies and road construction for income.

It wasn’t until 2012 that DeMarco began to gain recognition in the music world, getting designated by Pitchfork Media for “Best new Music” in response to his album, 2. DeMarco’s song Moving like Mike was even licensed by Target for a commercial.

DeMarco has also started working with other accomplished musicians including the Japandroids and Tyler the Creator.  With all of this new activity, DeMarco is busier than ever and moving up the ladder of the music industry.

DeMarco has performed at various music fests around the world this year including the Oshega Festival in Canada, the Stay Out West Festival in Sweden, the Padres de Coura Festival in Portugal and many more. Needless to say, DeMarco is well versed in festival performing and is sure to entertain at ACL.
