The 2018 NFL Draft is now done and all 32 teams have chosen players they think will help benefit their team. Every team made picks that were great, bad and confusing. Some teams made trades with other teams to acquire their picks or to acquire veteran players on their team. Here is a look at my analysis for some of the teams picks during the draft.
The Browns made a splash with their first and fourth overall pick, drafting quarterback Baker Mayfield at number one and cornerback Denzel Ward at number four. Both players will make impacts on the team as Mayfield is one of the top quarterbacks in the draft and Ward is ranked as one of the top corners. In an interview prior to the draft, Mayfield said that whatever team drafts him will be a winner, therefore, in my opinion, the Browns are winners in drafting Mayfield.
New York Giants:
After the Browns selected Mayfield as the number one overall pick, I knew the Giants were going after running back Saquon Barkley. Not only the best running back in the draft, he’s also the best player and should make an impact for the Giants right out of the gate. He might be the Ezekiel Elliott of all rookie running backs in the NFL. During the season, with the Giants having Barkley, they will run the ball more than passing. They also got guard Will Hernandez, which will make the offensive line better along with the signing of Nate Solder at tackle.
New York Jets:
By drafting Sam Darnold, the Jets probably found their franchise quarterback. Ranked as one of the top quarterbacks in the draft, Darnold might be the starter for next year considering they have Josh McCown, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg.
The Colts made their offensive line better by drafting guard Quenton Nelson. Nelson should be a starter at guard for the Colts and should be a good addition to the line.
With quarterback Tyrod Taylor going to the Browns, the Bills are looking for a quarterback for their franchise. Look no further than Josh Allen. Another top quarterback in the draft, the Bills may have also gotten their franchise quarterback and Allen may also be the starting quarterback once the season starts. Their defense also got better with linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.
The Bears had a decent defense last season and with a new season coming, their defense got better with the addition of linebacker Roquan Smith. He could have a starting position for the team and should make the defense better.
By drafting quarterback Josh Rosen, he can sit and learn from Carson Palmer. Rosen is another top quarterback in the draft and, unless the coaches see Rosen as a starting quarterback.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
The defensive line just got better with the addition of Vita Vea. One of the top defensive lineman in the draft, he should be a starter and will make an impact on the line. Add in former Giants defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul to the line and the Bucs can have one of the top defensive lines in the NFL.
Having a decent defensive line last season, the line got better with the addition of Da’Ron Payne. He should have a starting position on the line and should have a good rookie season with the Redskins.
Los Angeles Chargers:
The Chargers got a great first round pick in the form of safety Derwin James. He should make an impact for the Chargers as he was mentored by Seahawks safety Earl Thomas and is also considered to be the Earl Thomas of the rookie safeties in the NFL.
Their first round pick may have caused a lot of debate. Although linebacker was a need for the Cowboys after losing Anthony Hitchens to the Chiefs and Kyle Wilber to the Raiders, they got a good pick in linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. The real question is should the Cowboys have gotten a wide receiver instead of a linebacker? With Dez Bryant released, the Cowboys tried finding a top receiver with options being Calvin Ridley, DJ Moore and Courtland Sutton. This was a debatable pick, but at least the Cowboys got a linebacker. They also made their offensive line better with guard Connor Williams that should help the line become elite. They also got wide receivers Michael Gallup and Cedrick Wilson, which should help the Cowboys find their WR1. Now that Jason Witten retired, they found a replacement in Dalton Schultz. One pick that surprised me was quarterback Mike White. To me, this pick was pointless considering the Cowboys already have their franchise quarterback in Dak Prescott and a good backup in Cooper Rush. They also drafted running back Bo Scarbrough which should help for depth purposes.
By already having a good offense, the Titans made their defense better by adding linebacker Rashaan Evans. Evans should be given a starting role for the Titans and should be a good contributor to the team.
The Panthers bolstered their receiver lineup with the addition of DJ Moore. He should be a good contributor to the team when he’s given playing time. With the receivers the Panthers already have plus Moore, the Panthers have one of the best lineups at the receiver position.
Just like the Panthers, the Falcons made their receiver lineup better with Calvin Ridley and should be a good contributor to the team when given playing time. Along with Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu, the Falcons will be one of the top teams with a good receiver lineup.
With the draft in the past, all rookie players will now have a chance to make a first impression to their team’s coaching staff in an attempt to get a spot onto the 53 man lineup during rookie minicamp. Let’s see how the teams do as their picks attempt to get a spot on the 53 man roster.
