The Texas A&M baseball team has started the season off well, as they are 37-10 overall and 16-8 in SEC play. They are currently the second-ranked team in the nation, and they will be looking to make the College World Series this year, missing out on a trip to Omaha last year.
To make it to Omaha, the Aggies will need continued success from their strong lineup. The team has been led by solid hitters such as Boomer White, Austin Homan, Hunter Melton, J.B. Moss, Ryne Birk, Michael Barash and Nick Choruby, who are all batting above .300.
This surplus of great hitters in the A&M lineup is what has helped them win close games. Texas A&M is the SEC’s best hitting team, as they have a team average of .320.
In addition to having high batting averages, the Aggies have had the ability to hit the long ball this season. The team has a combined 45 home runs, and Hunter Melton, Nick Banks, Ryne Birk and J.B. Moss all have more than five home runs.
What has been impressive about the Aggies is that the production of their bats has not gone down in SEC play. With the SEC being easily the best conference in college baseball, it was expected that the production of the Aggies’ bats would go down as competition increased, but that has not been the case. Players such as White and Banks have been on fire in SEC play, leading the team to a stellar start in conference play.
In addition to the Aggies’ stellar bats, their pitching has been fantastic this year. The pitching staff has shown significant depth this season, as eight pitchers have ERAs lower than 3.00, which is considered a great ERA.
The Aggies’ magical season continued on Saturday, as pitcher Kyle Simonds threw a no-hitter against the Vanderbilt, the fifth-ranked team at the time. Simonds pitched a complete game and only let one batter get on base with an error. This was the 12th no-hitter in school history and the first one in SEC play since 1994.
The Aggies will need more phenomenal pitching performances if they want to make it to Omaha for the College World Series. While it is very difficult to be one of the eight teams in the College World Series, the Aggies have a good shot, as their hitting and pitching has been stellar lately.
