Boys’ basketball looks to top last year’s record

The varsity boys basketball team recently defeated the Cedar Creek Eagles on Dec. 6 with a score of 51-36. The team is preparing for their next game against East View tomorrow. Their overall record is currently 7-6, and they are trying to beat their record of 17-18 they had last year.
Out of all of their games this season, the boys are looking ahead to their big game against arch rival, Cedar Park, on Jan. 11. During the 2011-2012 season, Vandegrift lost to the Timberwolves 59-53 at home. This year, the game is at VHS and the team hopes to show them their confidence and determination with the help of captains Zach Hartman and Zach Amundson. The starting lineup is made up of Hartman, Hunter Gross, Davis Florence, Ryan Brewster and Nick Fionda.
“We are a fun team to watch so students should come and watch us play. We definitely need to work on starting off strong as for the majority of our games we have started slow and had to fight our way back for a win. As far as district goes, I think we will be better than people expect. We have a tough district so it’s going to be a tough ride but we have the talent and heart to face it,” Amundson said.
The JV boys basketball team is also doing well this season with a current record of 5-6. This season they are led by junior captain Chris Fernandes.
“We have a pretty young team this year but we are getting better with every day of practice. We can improve as we learn to play together as a team and do all of the little things right,” Fernandes said.
The freshman teams’ record is 7-1 this season so far. The captain is Drayton Whitesides and the starting lineup is Reid Pitman, Drayton Whiteside, Cody Walther, Pakstan Segunia and Josh Rinn.
“Everyone on our team is really close together but we need to play more basketball and get more experience to become better,” Pitman said.
