Five things to do in Austin over Thanksgiving Break

Madeline Smyser, Staff Reporter

Not everyone travels over Thanksgiving Break. For those of us that stay home, a week of house arrest seems inevitable. But there are plenty of awesome things to do right here in Austin! Without further ado, here are five things to do in Austin this Thanksgiving.

1. Volunteer

Thanksgiving is a time of thanks and giving (surprise!). Spend a day of your break helping those who aren’t as fortunate as you. Volunteer with organizations such as Mobile Loaves and Fishes or Operation Turkey, who make sure that everyone has a Thanksgiving meal.

2. See a local play

Charlotte's Web

There are theatres all over Austin and many are giving performances on the weekends of Thanksgiving Break. Catch Charlotte’s Web at ZACH Theatre, Lost Girl at Texas Theatre and Dance, Sherlock Holmes at Austin Playhouse or one of the many others showing before and after Thanksgiving. 3. Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Though it make not take place in Austin, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an American tradition that you should be sure to watch this year.

4. See a movie

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Two of the most anticipated movies of the year, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Moana, come out on Thanksgiving. Take the whole family down to the Moviehouse for a luxury showing of one (or both!) of these soon-to-be-blockbusters.

5. Visit the Trail of Lights

Post-Thanksgiving, you still have three full days before school starts again. By then, it’s time get into the Christmas spirit. And what’s better than attending the Zilker Park Trail of Lights Tree Lighting?
