Choir received sweepstakes at UIL last week. The judges also gave each choir one ratings in concert and sight reading contests. All choirs for the last three years have received nothing less than sweepstakes at UIL, but this is the first time that all the choirs that attended received all ones, being one of the only two choir programs in the region to do so.

“This is a big accomplishment for any choir,” choir director Michael Feris said. “VHS choirs will continue to work for excellence in UIL competition.”

Last Wednesday and Thursday the choir students performed at the McNeil High School Performing Arts Center. The Non-Varsity Treble Choir performed Wednesday and the Varsity Treble Choir and Mixed Choir on Thursday.

“It was exciting to be a part of Mr. Feris’ first year of getting all ones,” said senior Nicole Rossi.

Previously this year, 12 students advanced to Pre-Area and 17 students became a part of the All Region Choir. Then sophomore Cami Everitt received first chair and advanced to Area choir auditions with juniors Nick Birk and Aaron Daniels as alternates.

“It was very exciting,” said Daniels. “I’m glad we did so well after all of our hard work.”

The choir’s UIL season is now over, however their spring show will be May 22 and the 23. The theme will be songs from movies such as the “Just a Dream” and “Just the Way You Are” mashup from “Pitch Perfect” and “Men in Tights” from “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”.  Next year, the choir will be able to compete at the state level for the first time.

“It was really great and fun,” said sophomore Madison Whiteside. “All the work we put in came together well and we came out on top.”
