Austin is the perfect place to paddle board on the lake, take a segway tour downtown, sip on a cold drink by a luxurious rooftop pool or take a hike with stunning views. But what is there to do when it gets cold? Here’s seven cold weather activities you and all your friends can look forward to.

1. The Turkey Trot

Taking place on Thanksgiving, with nearly 200,000 participants, this race is one of the largest five mile runs in Texas and one of the largest turkey trots in the nation. Hosted by Thundercloud Subs, it is one of the most cherished Thanksgiving traditions in Austin. Donations are raised for Caritas of Austin, an organization working to prevent homelessness.

1. PlayLand Skate Center

Take it back to the ’70s & get groovy with your friends at the Playland Skate Center no matter the weather, at this indoor skating you can enjoy an impressive light show, fog machine and state of the art sound system playing a wide variety of music. Skating around the floor is fun for beginners and pros, rent skates for less than $10 and cha-cha slide for as long as you would like.

3. Ice Skate on the Plaza of Whole Foods

Embrace the cold season with Ice Skating on the Plaza at the Downtown location of Whole Foods, one of Austin’s most anticipated events of the holiday season! The ice rink is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. beginning Nov. 24 through Jan. 15. Enjoy skating on real ice and sipping on a cup of hot cocoa with friends.

4. Zach theater presents “A Christmas Carol”

A Christmas classic with outstanding performances, Zach theaters annual musical “A Christmas Carol” is the perfect way to start off your holiday right. Showing from November 21 to December 30, this performance is the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit and enjoy a night out with friends and family.

5. Ballet Austin’s “The Nutcracker”

“The Nutcracker” returns to Ballet Austin for its 56th year Dec. 7 to 23. Enjoy the classic ballet beautiful performance with hundreds of dancers, gorgeous sets and costumes, and live music performed by the Austin Symphony Orchestra. “The Nutcracker” is a must-see this holiday season with friends and family for a luxury night out in the cold weather.

6. The Trail of Lights

Dazzling lights and elaborate set-ups, the trail of lights is not an event you want to miss. Started in 1965, it is the second largest event in Austin and was previously known as the “Yule Fest.” It will take place at Zilker Park from Nov. 25 to Dec. 31. Embrace the Austin traditions and have an experience you will never forget.

7. Holiday Sing Along and Downtown Stroll

Join fellow Austinites at the Downtown Austin Alliance’s Holiday Stroll Dec. 1 along Congress Avenue between 9th and 11th streets. This free, family-friendly event includes. photos with Santa, a petting zoo, live ice sculpture, holiday arts & crafts, a live mural painting, local food trucks and vendors. Live music will add to your holiday cheer throughout the event.
