Austin’s Hidden Boutiques

Tired of your run of the mall clothing chains? Well lucky for you, Austin has a wide variety of thrift stores and boutiques.

If you typically shop at Forever 21, Nordstrom or other large stores, then try SoCo or South Congress Avenue. This street offers a variety of shopping options from Flipnastics, with a coffee shop upstairs and a thrift store downstairs, to Urban Outfitters. Also nearby is Feather’s, the most talked about vintage store in Austin. It was on Lucky magazine’s list of top ten vintage stores in the country. Second Time Around brags that it offers the widest selection of vintage clothing, costume jewelry, and antique home décor.  Down the street, Reclaim Resale New Sustainable is for the green freak in us all with eco-friendly new and old clothing. If wearing vintage clothing isn’t your thing, then try American Apparel.

If you prefer to shop at Delia’s, American Eagle or other small organized stores, then try the Drag. Cream is a vintage store that is a personal favorite of mine, with a well-informed and friendly staff. Also, Amelia’s offers a wide variety of costume jewelry and antique décor. Laced with Romance is a highly organized store with clothing from the 1920’s to 50’s but can be on the pricey side.

Finally for the true vintage shopper, go to the North Loop. Stores such as Blue Velvet and Hog Wild offer clothes from the 20’s to the present at rock bottom prices. Just come prepared to sort through piles of clothing. Blue velvet is a six time Austin Chronicle and three time Austin American Statesman winner for best vintage store. Just across the street is Blackbird, an adorable shop filled with trendy clothes.  Also Ermine Vintage offers another chance to thrift.

For any type of shopper, there is a boutique waiting in Austin.
