Fall Television Premieres Look Promising

While many shows are returning this fall, networks are also showcasing some familiar faces coming back to television in new shows.

On Mondays this fall, the always dramatic Gossip Girl returns, along with Two and A Half Men, How I Met Your Mother and House. Starting September 19, the comedy 2 Broke Girls will air its pilot episode on CBS. The show will follow How I Met Your Mother at 8:30. 2 Broke Girls stars Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, who work together at a cupcake shop in New York City. Next up on the CW is Hart of Dixie, which will follow Gossip Girl at 9 starting on the 26th. The show’s main character is Rachel Bilson, who starred on The OC as Summer Roberts. Bilson stars as Dr. Zoe Hart, who moves from the Big Apple to the small town of Bluebell, Alabama, since there are no jobs for her in the city. According to TV Guide, the show is “Everwood-esque”.

The last show of the evening, and possibly one of the most highly anticipated, is Terra Nova, airing on Fox. This science fiction show is set in 2149, where Earth is extinct and scientists have invented a time machine making it possible for humans to travel back in time 85 million years to prehistoric time. The show revolves around science fiction events meaning it’s a bit like LOST. It has crazy out-of-this-world plot lines, and will appeal to those who loved shows that were like LOST. Terra Nova is based on a book called The Stone Gods by Jeanette Winterson. Terra Nova premieres on the 26th.

Tuesdays are less dramatic and more comedic, with the exception of the CW’s drama Ringer. Ringer premiered at 9 on September 13. A familiar face on the CW, Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), returns to television in this hit drama. Gellar plays identical twins who haven’t spoken for eight years. The show promises to be suspenseful and full of drama, and is sure to keep viewers guessing.

On a lighter note, Tim Allen will return on Tuesday nights on ABC in his new show Last Man Standing. The half-hour comedy  debuts on October 11 with a one-hour pilot episode. Allen stars as Mike Baxter, a director of marketing at an outdoor sporting goods store in Colorado.  Allen will star as a father whose family is full of women; his wife and three daughters.

Another likely comedy hit stars Katy Perry lookalike Zooey Deschanel in a single-camera sitcom premiering on September 20 at 8. In New Gir,. Deschanel plays a woman in her late 20s who tries to get over a break up with her model ex-boyfriend by moving in with three single guys. As scandalous at it may sound, Deschanel keeps it appropriate and her roommates teach her what they can about life, love and herself.  The show will air on FOX.

Wednesdays on ABC  should be hysterical, with shows like The Middle, Modern Family, and the new hilarious comedy, Suburgatory. The series begins on September 28 and will show the life of a divorced father who moves his 16-year-old daughter out of New York City to the suburbs.

Another comedy that will airing on Wednesdays is I Hate My Teenage Daughter, which will premiere later in the fall on November 30 at 8:30. The show stars Jamie Pressly and Katie Finneran as two single mothers who are raising their teenage daughters. Pressly and Finneran realize that their two daughters are growing up to be exactly like the girls who taunted them in their high school days, making it hard to live with them.

ABC ‘s new drama Revenge premieres at 10 on September 21. The show stars Emily VanCamp (Brothers & Sisters, Everwood). Surprisingly, the show is loosely based off of Alexandre Dumas’ novel, The Count of Monte Cristo.  VanCamp stars as woman who goes back to the town where her family was destroyed, and seeks revenge on the people who ruined her life. The show is being advertised as a drama, mystery, and a thriller.

Thursdays are jam packed with new shows. ABC is bringing back Charlie’s Angels. The show is produced by Drew Barrymore and stars Minka Kelly, Rachael Taylor and Annie Ilonzeh.  The show premieres on September 22, the 35th anniversary of the original Charlie’s Angels series, and will be full of action, crime and drama. The show takes place in Miami as it did in the 1970s version.

Up next on Thursday is the new sitcom How to Be a Gentleman. The show follows the friendship of two men, David Hornsby and John Bridges. Hornsby stars as an uptight columnist, while Bridges is a self confident, outgoing trainer. The show will be similar to Two and a Half Men. How to Be a Gentleman premieres on September 29 at 8:30 right after The Big Bang Theory. After How to Be a Gentleman is a new crime drama called Person of Interest. This mystery will keep the audience guessing.

Similar to The Vampire Diaries on the CW, The Secret Circle is another supernatural show will air; focusing on witchcraft instead of vampires. The Secret Circle stars many young, new faces that you may have seen. Britt Robertson, who starred in the CW’s series Life Unexpected stars  as the main character, who finds out in the premiere that she’s a witch. Another face one may recognize is Phoebe Jane Elizabeth Tonkin, who starred on Nickeloden’s hit show H20: Just Add Water. For any of you who watched Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, you will recognize Thomas Alexander Dekker,  who played John Connor in Terminator. Both Dekker and Tonkin play characters with supernatural powers, but while one will try to save Robertson, the other wants her dead.

On Friday, for any of you Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice fans, or fans of the supernatural, A Gifted Man will air September 23 on CBS. The story follows a widowed, self-absorbed but talented surgeon who tries to determine his purpose on earth when he is visited by the spirit of his dead ex-wife.

NBC and ABC are both premiering shows this fall based on fairly tales. NBC has Grimm, which airs on October 21. Set in Portland, Oregon, the show is a bit of CSI combined with a little bit of Supernatural, and some Brothers Grimm fairy tales. It is set in present day, and will follow the life of Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli), who finds that he comes from a long line of “grimms”, which, in case you were not aware, are hunters who fight supernatural forces. Giuntoli is a homicide detective and works alongside his partner Hang Griffin (Russell Hornsby).

On ABC, Once Upon a Time will air beginning on October 23. This dramatic fantasy stars Jennifer Morrison (House) and Ginnifer Goodwin (Something Borrowed).  The show was inspired by classic fairy tales reset in the present day, and will have new twists and mysteries in them. Set in Storybrooke, Maine, the town is parallel to a world in which fairy tale characters look like your average, normal human beings, but they don’t remember who they are or anything about themselves.

Also on ABC is PAN AM. Set in the 1960s, and focusing on the lives of the pilots and flight attendants who worked for the famous airline Pan American World Airways in 1963, the show stars Christina Ricci as one of the main characters. It’s a period drama, and will premiere on September 25.
